Character Name: Raj
Series: October Daye
Timeline: post Winter Long
Canon Resource Link: Well there’s the Author’s page on the series and a very scant wiki page
Character History: Raj is the first Prince of Cats born in sixty years, and thus has grown up knowing he’s special and important, which combined with his natural Cait Sidhe smugness could have made him truly insufferable. Certainly growing up his father Sampson tried to encourage such a mindset, but whether due to his own natural inclinations, or due to Tybalt’s moderating influence, he’s managed to avoid too much attitude. It helps that, since the fae age slowly, Raj is still a young teenager and thus still very much influenced by the people he’s around. When he was taken into the Court of Cats, Tybalt would have been within his rights to adopt him as a son, but instead he took Raj as a nephew, leaving him to be raised by his parents. Which was perhaps not the best decision, since his father Sampson was both power-hungry and quite willing to attempt to use his son as a pawn. Still, Raj managed to have a pretty typical fait sidhe childhood.
Things started to change when he was captured by the Firstborn fae known as Blind Michael. While trying to escape from Blind Michael’s lands, he ran into October “Toby” Daye, who’d traveled to Blind Michael’s realm in an attempt to rescue Raj and the other fae children who’d been kidnapped. With October’s help, Raj was able to return home, and her heroism left a big impression on the young Cait Sidhe. He also met the young Daoine Sidhe Quentin who would become one of his closest friends. Toby and Quentin were some of the first Cait Sidhe that he’d met and he slowly started to realize the prejudices his father was trying to instill in him might not be completely accurate. He was in fact so impressed by Toby’s courage in rescuing him and the other Cait Sidhe children that when she was attacked in the Court of Cats, he stepped in and fought Toby’s attacker instead. It wasn’t a fair fight, and he probably would have been severely hurt or killed if Tybalt hadn’t stepped in.
Soon after, his mother died after eating meat that had been poisoned by a fae assassin known as Oleander. Oleander’s been poisoning people in an attempt to frame Toby, and Raj got caught up helping her, Tybalt and Quentin figure out what is going on, and clear Toby’s name. As Tybalt’s heir he can’t officially become Toby’s squire like Quentin is, but he ends up pretty much acting as one, both because of his deep respect for Toby, and his friendship with Quentin. Tybalt encourages both relationships, partly because he also respects Toby, and because he thinks it’s good for the young Prince of Cats.
Raj’s father disagrees however - Cait Sidhe should hold themselves apart, especially future Kings. He doesn’t approve of Tybalt’s recent changes in the Court, especially Tybalt’s growing relationship with Toby, so he convinced Raj that Tybalt was hurting the Court of Cats with his actions, and managed to talk the boy into taking a gun with him to attempt to kill Tybalt and become the King of Cats himself. When Raj initially refused, Sampson revealed that he’d already killed Toby, and that Tybalt was dying. While that wasn’t precisely true, what was important was that Raj believed it. Sampson also told his son that if he didn’t kill Tybalt, the Court of Cats would be destroyed and Sampson would kill everyone Raj cared about. So he took the gun and tried to confront Tybalt. Fortunately, the older King of Cats was also wiser, and saw the assassination attempt for what it was - a scared young man talked into doing something he didn’t want to do. Carefully he got the story of what was going on out of the young Prince, and made Raj decide who he stood with - Tybalt or his father. Nearly sick with relief, Raj was more than willing to stand with Tybalt. When his father was finally killed, Raj felt more relief than sorrow.
Things are hardly normal after that - no one who’s lives touch on Toby’s ever gets a long term chance to relax. Raj found himself getting better and better at traveling the Shadow Roads while leading a passenger, since while Tybalt could carry two through the Shadow Roads, it was a lot easier if he could take Toby, and Raj could take Quentin. It also let them split up, which was highly useful when Toby got inadvertently addicted to goblin fruit, because it meant Quentin and Raj could continue researching and looking for the lost heir to the kingdom while Toby and Tybalt were trying to find a cure for the addiction. His friendship with Quentin deepened, and helped him grow both as a person and in his own powers and confidence as a Cait Sidhe.
One day he will have to fight and kill Tybalt for the throne and either become the new King of Cats or die trying. But for now, that’s a long, long way away.
Made even longer by his arrival at the castle.
Abilities/Special Powers: As a pureblooded fae, Raj is more graceful and more attractive than a human. He’s practically immortal unless he’s killed, and while Cait Sidhe don’t heal quite as fast as some other fae, he can heal from pretty much any wound that doesn’t out right kill him, unless it’s inflicted with iron or silver. He can cast simple illusions such as the ones he uses to appear human and ones to avoid notice.
As a Cait Sidhe, there is a distinctively feline cast to his features - his glass green eyes have slitted pupils, pointed ears, sharp teeth, and retractable claws on his hands and feet. His hair is also the same red of his coat in cat form. Because yes, as a Cait Sidhe he can shapeshift into a cat. Specifically a red Abyssinian. He can also communicate with cats, and has some control over them, though not to the same extent as Tybalt does.
He also has access to the Shadow Roads, which let him get from place to place quickly, but they must be anchored by a King or Queen of Cats, and since Raj is only a prince, he’s not going to be able to access them in Wonderland.
Third-Person Sample: One of the problems Raj had found with hanging around non-Cait Sidhe was the number of times people thought it appropriate to mention “Curiosity killed the cat”. It was a stupid statement as far as he was concerned. He wasn’t a cat after all, and it’d take a lot more than mere curiosity to kill him. Besides, exploring was fun! Especially this castle which seemed to be almost as twisty and convoluted as the Court of Cats. He could only wish Quentin was here with him. Or maybe not, since there was the whole getting-kidnapped-into-another-world aspect of being here. At least it hadn’t been as bad as getting kidnapped by Blind Michael. And both Toby and Tybalt and even the Luidaeg were here, so even if things got bad, surely one or all of them could straighten it out.
Oh, who was he kidding, with all three of them here, things were almost certain to get bad. Messy bad. Toby would probably end up bleeding, Tybalt would freak out over her, and Raj would be told to go some place safe and hide.
Which meant he should explore the castle now, while things were still mostly quiet. Then when the shit hit the fan he’d know what to do, where to go. Maybe even know something about this place that the others didn’t so he could actually help. See? It wasn’t just curiosity, it was preparing for disaster. Being prepared was something he’d have to be as a King after all. It was practice. That it was fun was secondary. Of course.
And besides. Everyone always forgot the second half of the cliche. Curiosity might have killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.
First-Person Sample: [The magic mirrors aren’t exactly technology per se, but they’re also not like anything Raj has dealt with back home. So he’s both fascinated and cautious about them. He’s kinda poking at this one right now.]
So how do you tell when these things are, y’know, on? Has anyone ever been using one to like shave or something and had it suddenly contact someone else? Or been contacted? ‘Cause I could see that being really funny. Don’t take it into the bathroom with you!
[His expression turns serious]
Okay, jokes aside, this place looks all cheerful and funny and stuff, but I’m not an idiot. There’s something going on here, and I’d kinda like a heads up on it before it like tries to kill me or turn me into a horse or something. Not that I can’t totally take care of myself, but it’s best to know what’s coming, right?
[And then a smile, though one with a very self-satisfied air to it]
Name’s Raj by the way. In case anyone needs me or anything.
